Three of the best sleeping positions if you have pain in the lumbar region, sciatica, or back pain in general are:
1. Side sleeping: Bring your legs slightly towards your chest and place a pillow between them. A full-body pillow can be helpful.
2. Back sleeping: If you place a pillow under your knees, it will help maintain the normal curve of the lumbar region. Roll a towel and place it under the lower back for additional support. A pillow will serve the same purpose for your neck.
3. Stomach sleeping: It can cause back pain, but if you have difficulty sleeping in any other way, you can reduce strain by placing a pillow under the lower abdomen and pelvis. If it doesn’t increase strain, put a pillow under your head. Try sleeping without any pillow under your head if you feel tension.
It’s worth examining whether the mattress or pillow is contributing to your discomfort. If the mattress is too soft, your spine may be misaligned, and if it’s too firm, it could put pressure on the hip joints.
